A 1-Unit Parade

It was Village Days period in Greendale, WI and our former Concert Band director was in town from Arizona that weekend. He found out that our bandwagon had a new canopy on it, so he wanted to put his low brass instrument to work while taking a ride in the bandwagon. After the regular festivities in the Village ended, about 10-15 of us got in the wagon and rode around, (a couple of the main streets were still blocked off, so we took some side roads)-there were still about 10-15 people along our route to wave at us as we went by. (The former director had been active as a music educator for some 40 years, primarily in the grade schools, before retiring. He’d also directed Concert, German, Swing and Village Ramblers Bands during that time.) After our “parade” we stopped at a Catering Place and had a great meal and shared old band stories (Believe me, there were plenty of those.) I’ve been in the Concert Band for more than 30 years, and one just doesn’t up and walk away from something like that.

I've been a clarinet player for more than 40 years and I could tell all kinds of funny band stories. I also follow women's volleyball and women's softball a lot.
