Long Overdue Update

Been a while since my last post. As far as my clarinet playing, I did a 2-set gig with Milwaukee Letter Carriers’ Band last January for the WI Broadcast Engineers’ Organization (the head of which retired, then passed away as the result of a heart attack.) 3 years earlier he had asked a small part of that band to play some Dixieland music while strolling during an indoor gig. After he passed, organization personnel invited the whole band to perform for a “Life Celebration” for the individual. The band had a 2 1/2 hour long rehearsal at the local Union branch office to prep, and then the day of the gig, two seperate 1-hour sets were performed. In the first set, band arrangements of “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Smile” (though your heart is aching) were included. After a break for the nice meal that was provided, more upbeat, up-tempo music “Smoky Joe’s Cafe”, a band arrangement of music from the group “Chicago” others of Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, Glenn Miller (combined with “At the Hop”, et al. The crowd just loved it.

Greendale Band just started rehearsing last March, working on our summer of ’22 concert schedule.

D3 softball underdog update: It’s Super Regional weekend. The NACC squad I was pulling for (Concordia-WI) lost its’ last 2 games to Case Western Reserve. NE Wesleyan (picked 5th in ARC pre-season poll) got to the conference tournament final, and, despite losing to Wartburg, still got into the NCAA tournament. First NCAA bid for NE Wesleyan since 2014, when its’ volleyball team received a bid as an independent. It’s down to 16 teams, now with WPI and Case the on-paper underdogs. Texas Lutheran and Belhaven will engage in a real dogfight. Randolph Macon, VA Wesleyan, Tufts, Berry, Bethel-MN, Millikin, Wartburg, ECSU, Trine, Salisbury, Mt. St. Joseph and Christopher Newport are still alive. WPI and Tufts are the only unraked squads alive yet.

I've been a clarinet player for more than 40 years and I could tell all kinds of funny band stories. I also follow women's volleyball and women's softball a lot.
